We built the foundation, a cistern and a mosaic patio among other unique features. The community members completed the interior and exterior treatments several months after we left.
2001 University of Washington Design/Build, Cuernavaca, Mexico.
I was very fortunate to have participated in a Design/Build program with the College of Architecture and Urban Planning and the Basic Initiative. We designed and built a library in a neighboring squatter community. I successfully organized a community art project, hand building 100 fresco panels to be painted by students, professors and community members. This project celebrated the history of fresco painting in Mexico and represented the colorful culture of the Mexican people. Before leaving I designed a plan for the installation of the panels in the interior of the library. What a life changing experience.
Our program took us to Havana, Cuba for three weeks. During this time we worked with the Department of Agriculture to renovate a chicken coop into a functional (and gorgeous) social center. Ask me about this and I will tell you all about this unique experience. It was an extraordinary.
